Integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education is a recent trend that refers to technologies which are being used for collecting, storing, editing, and passing on knowledge and information in various forms in the teaching-learning process. The term ICT comprises of three words which are information, communication, and technology. It is the mode of education that use the information and communication technology to enhance, support and widen the information from one to another. Shiv K. Mitra said, "Educational technology can be conceived as a science of techniques and methods by which educational goals could be realized". We may say that educational technology is concerned with the systematic application of science and technology in the field of education, thus may be defined as the application of technology to education (Mangal, 2001). There was a time when the post man had to carry bundle of letters on his back to hand over people by walking. But now the system has changed and it has become easy with the development of the information technology . Really, it's amazing for all. An electronic bond has been established between the sender and receiver through the web net throughout the world. For this communication, technological applications are the main to send, receive, collect, analyze, classify and transmit the information from one to another. This technology is the application of scientific knowledge and learning to improve the effectiveness and efficiency in teaching-learning process.

The main objectives of information and communication technology are:

  • To make the communication easy and interesting within a short time through the application of technology.
  • To help the students to become competent and skilled to use the basic knowledge and skills.
  • To equip the learners with appropriate social skills using technology.
  • To give a new dimension to communication process.
  • To access information.
  • To gather, store, retrieve, process, analyze and transmit information.

In the new trend of education, we must be aware of the term and use of ICT in education. The term ICT refers mainly the use of hardware and software for the transmission of information. It transmits, store, create and share the information or exchange the ideas and thoughts to another. Now a days, in teaching-learning process ICT plays an important role to motivate the learners and for easy and interesting learning. It functions as a source of knowledge, as a medium to transmit knowledge and information.

The process of communication is shown in figure 1.

Tools of ICT: Tools are the devices used in information and communication technology. There are various ICT tools for Education. Which are:

  • Desktop and laptop
  • Projector
  • Digital cameras
  • Printer
  • Tablets
  • Spreadsheets
  • Animation
  • Web 2.0 (skype, blog, google docs, google earth, curriki, flickr)
  • Television
  • Radio
  • Telephone and mobile
  • Internet

There are also online video tools which are familiar to all. For example, YouTube, Teacher Tube, School Tube etc.

Search Engine: A search engine is a software system that is designed to carry out web searches. They search the World Wide Web in a systematic way for information specified in a textual web search query. It is a program that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used especially for finding sites on the World Wide Web.

There are various search engines to integrate ICT in education. They are:

  1. Microsoft Bing
  2. Google
  3. Yahoo
  4. Baidu
  5. Yandex
  6. DuckDuckGo
  7. Ask.com
  8. Ecosia
  9. Aol.com
  10. Internet Archive

Most of the time google is immensely popular among the people of the world. We can use different familiar tools of google.

Google tools: for example: Gmail, google calendar, google earth, google map, google drive, google chrome, google classroom, google docs, google spread sheets are most common tools which are remarkably familiar to us.

Use and importance of ICT in education: ICT helps in different ways:

  • Motivate the learners.
  • Helps in engagement of the learners.
  • Helps in active learning.
  • Enhance teaching techniques.
  • Helps in collaborative learning
  • Helps in creative learning.
  • Helps in interactive learning.
  • Helps in evaluation.
  • Helps in international understanding, unity between the countries of the world.
  • Helps in effective use of ICT software and hardware for teaching-learning process.
  • Helps to improve teaching skills and innovative teaching.
  • Helps to design educational environment.
  • Helps in improving knowledge, attitude, and skills of the teacher.
  • It can remove the traditional method of teaching and prepare teacher to apply a new method of teaching using technology.

Present Communication service Programme: Ours is an age of science and technology. The internet system and the innovations of computer, TV etc., have changed the application of communication. In this age of 21st century all aspects of life are related to ICT. Following are some of the service programme of communication.

  1. E-mail
  2. Teleconferencing
  3. Videoconferencing
  4. Website
  5. Fax machine
  6. Telecommunication service
  7. Internet
  8. Radio and television

Teaching is an art. It is a highly skilled job that requires adequate knowledge on the content and pedagogical knowledge of the teachers. The main function of the teacher is to create an effective teaching situation using proper tools. Technology can help the teacher to be successful in every step of teaching. A teacher must be well equipped in technological skills besides the knowledge of the subject matter. He must be a Master of Communication skill, skill of interaction with the students, skill of making the students to learn and think, independently and skill of evaluating and reinforcing pupil's learning behaviour (Mangal, 2001). Classroom is now changing its look from the traditional one. Education is now changed to child centric education and therefore, the teacher must be equipped and prepare himself or herself to cope up with different technologies in education for effective teaching.

Recent trends in teacher education: Based on the needs of the society, the teacher education have been changed now to improve the educational field emphasizing on different technical skills.

Following are some of the new trends and innovations in teacher education.

  • Micro teaching
  • Simulated teaching
  • Programmed instruction
  • Inter-disciplinary approach
  • Team teaching
  • Action research etc.

ICT integration approach in education:

It is particularly important to integrate the ICT to be proficient in teaching-learning process.

There are three ways of ICT integration which is shown in figure 2:

Cycle

Figure:2 Three ways of ICT integration

Learning through ICT means teachers and learners use ICT to transform the process of teaching-learning. Learning with ICT means use of ICT resources in the classroom. And learning about ICT refers to the skills and knowledge of using ICT to support learning.

An active user of ICT integrates it in teaching-learning process by analyzing, creating and contributing the materials in the classroom. Following is the model of technology adoption known as ADDIE Model. In this model A stands for analyze, D stands for design, D stands for development, I stands for implementation and E stands for evaluate.

Application of ICT in education can increase interest and act as a motivating factor among the learners. It can develop the proficiency of the teachers. The success of teachers mainly depend on the use of technologies in education. As a teacher, he/she can integrate in all the subjects according to the level of the learners. Different software is used in different subjects to integrate ICT. We have many challenges and problems also to integrate ICT in the classroom. Besides , we should try to integrate it in the teaching-learning process to develop the technical knowledge and for the systematic application of different tools as per the level of the learners. ICT has now became an essential part of education. Therefore, a teacher must be well equipped with the use of ICT in Education.
